Search for SEO services in Delhi and you will see pages of agencies, freelancers and directories, many promising page one in 30 days. A dental clinic in Rohini, a CA firm in Connaught Place or a furniture showroom in Kirti Nagar usually cannot tell the difference between them from a website or a phone call. They all use the same words.
This guide is for local business owners in Delhi NCR who want to hire an SEO expert in Delhi and want to know what to check. It does not rank anyone. It explains what the work involves for a local business, what Google's own rules say, and what to settle before you pay anyone, including us.
What local SEO work actually involves
For a business that serves customers in a city, SEO has two halves. One is the website: can Google crawl it, does each service have a clear page, is it fast on a phone. The other is the Google Business Profile: the listing that appears in Maps and in the local pack above the normal results. A provider who only talks about one half is doing half the job.
Google's page on hiring an SEO lists what a good one does: a review of your site content and structure, technical advice on hosting, redirects, error pages and JavaScript, content development, keyword research, training and expertise in specific markets and geographies. For a Delhi business, that last point is the local part.
| Area | What the work looks like | How you can check it |
|---|---|---|
| Technical audit | Crawl errors, indexing, mobile layout, speed, broken redirects | Ask for the audit file and the Search Console screenshots behind it |
| Service and area pages | One clear page per service; area pages only where you really serve | Read them. Each should help a customer, not repeat the same text with a new locality name |
| Google Business Profile | Correct categories, hours, services, photos, posts, review replies | You stay owner and can see every change in the profile |
| Reviews and mentions | A plain process to ask real customers for reviews; listings in genuine local directories | No paid or bulk reviews; no rewards for reviews |
| Tracking and reports | Calls, form enquiries, WhatsApp clicks and direction requests by month | Numbers come from your own Analytics and Business Profile |
Our SEO audit checklist covers the technical half in detail, and SEO for small businesses explains what to fix first when the budget is small.
Why Delhi NCR is many local markets
Google's Business Profile help says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Distance is how far you are from the person searching. Prominence is how well known your business is, which includes reviews and mentions across the web.
Distance is the part many Delhi businesses miss. Someone searching for a physiotherapist from Janakpuri is shown different clinics from someone searching in Gurugram's Sector 29 or in Noida. Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad behave like separate local markets, and even large localities inside Delhi do. A good provider asks where your customers actually come from before choosing keywords, and does not promise that a Lajpat Nagar shop will show for every search in Gurugram.
Google Business Profile rules a provider must follow
Much of the poor SEO sold in Delhi breaks the Business Profile rules, and the business owner pays when the profile is suspended. Google's guidelines for representing your business are clear on the common tricks:
- Name: the profile name should reflect your real-world business name. Adding keywords or locations, such as 'Best Skin Clinic South Delhi', is not permitted.
- Address: use a precise, accurate address. P.O. boxes and remote mailboxes are not acceptable, and an office in a co-working space only qualifies if it has clear signage.
- Service-area businesses: if you visit customers rather than receive them, Google says you should hide your address and set a service area instead. Fake offices in each locality are not allowed.
- Reviews: Google's content policy bans reviews that were paid for, and bans offering discounts, free services or other incentives in exchange for a review or for removing a negative one. Asking only happy customers for reviews is also against the rules.

Own your accounts from day one
This is the most important practical step, and it costs nothing. Many Delhi businesses find, when they change agency, that the old provider owns their Search Console, Analytics or Business Profile. Getting them back can take weeks.
| Account | You keep | Give the provider |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Owner (verified) | Full user. Google's help says full users can view all data and submit sitemaps, but cannot add or remove owners or users |
| Google Business Profile | Primary owner | Manager. Managers can edit the profile but cannot add or remove users or delete the profile |
| Google Analytics 4 | Administrator | Editor or Analyst, depending on the work |
| Domain and hosting | The registrar and hosting login in your company's name | Developer access only when needed |
When a provider leaves, Search Console's help says removing a user is not always enough: an owner who verified with a token, such as an HTML tag on your site, can verify again unless you remove that token too. Ask your next provider to check the unused ownership tokens list on day one.
Freelancer, agency or consultant
Delhi has all three, and each can be the right choice. What matters is the fit with your size and who will actually do the work.
| Option | Works well when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Freelancer | One location, a simple site, a small monthly budget | Holidays and illness stop the work; check how content and links are made |
| Agency | Many locations or a large site that needs writers, developers and designers | The senior person on the sales call may never touch your account |
| Consultant | You have an in-house team or developer and need direction, audits and review | You need people to carry out the advice; ask who will |
Our earlier guide, how to choose an SEO consultant, has 12 questions that apply to any of the three.

Red flags in the Delhi SEO market
- A guaranteed number one ranking. Google's own page on hiring an SEO says no one can guarantee a number one ranking, and if someone does, you should find someone else.
- Cold emails and WhatsApp messages. Google tells businesses to be wary of SEO firms that contact you out of the blue. A message saying your site has '47 critical errors' is a sales script.
- Secret methods. Google warns against providers who will not clearly explain what they plan to do. You should understand every change made to your site and profile.
- Link packages. '500 backlinks for a fixed fee' usually means low-quality links. Google's spam policies treat buying links to pass ranking credit as link spam.
- Reports with only keyword positions. Rankings for a list of phrases you never searched for do not pay rent. Ask for calls, enquiries and direction requests.
- Long lock-in with no exit terms. A fair contract says what happens to content, accounts and work in progress if either side ends it.
Questions to ask before you sign
- 1Which areas of Delhi NCR will you target for my business, and why those?
- 2Can you show me two or three local projects I can check live, with the client's permission?
- 3Will I stay owner of Search Console, Analytics and Business Profile? What access do you need?
- 4What will you change in the first 30 days, and what will I see in the first report?
- 5How will you get reviews, and how do you make sure it follows Google's review policy?
- 6Who writes the content, and will it be checked by someone who knows my business?
- 7How do you build links or mentions? Do you buy links?
- 8Which numbers will you report each month, and from which tool?
- 9What happens to the content and accounts if we stop working together?
How to judge results fairly
Local SEO takes months, not days, and Google's page on hiring an SEO suggests asking a provider what results to expect, in what time frame, and how they measure success. Agree on that in writing at the start. Good measures for a local business are calls and direction requests from the Business Profile, form and WhatsApp enquiries from the website tracked in Analytics, and the queries and clicks in Search Console. Set up Google Analytics 4 tracking for these enquiries before the work starts.
